Forget big resolutions. Small steps are the real game-changer

It’s January and you know what that means... an avalanche of New Year’s resolutions. Everyone is suddenly planning to transform their lives!

Run marathons, meditate for two hours a day, quit sugar, become a Michelin-star chef, solve climate change on the weekends... It’s inspiring but it’s also a bit absurd.

Big resolutions almost never work. Why? Because they’re overwhelming. They’re intimidating. They require a level of perfection that’s just not realistic for most people juggling life.

Here’s the thing... You don’t need to overhaul your entire existence to make meaningful changes. The real magic happens in the small stuff.

I’m not just saying this—I’ve lived it. Last year I released my first album. Sounds impressive, right? Like I had some grand, master plan to conquer the music world? Not even close.

If you’d told me two years ago that I’d write an album, I would’ve laughed in your face. The idea felt huge, terrifying, and way out of my league. But one day, I wrote a single song. That’s it. One tiny step. Then I wrote another. And another. One day, I looked up and realized I had enough songs for a whole album.

That’s the power of small steps—they sneak up on you and turn into something bigger than you ever imagined.

The truth is, we don’t change our lives by setting colossal, pie-in-the-sky goals. We change our lives by showing up every day and doing the small, unsexy stuff that adds up.

Want to get healthy? Forget the “lose 20 pounds by March” nonsense. Just go for a 10-minute walk.

Thinking of starting a business? Don’t quit your job tomorrow. Write down one idea today.

Dreaming of writing a book? Start with a crappy first sentence. Seriously, just one sentence.

Small steps are approachable. They’re doable. And, most importantly, they’re sustainable.

When you focus on small, consistent actions, you build momentum. You gain confidence. And eventually, you wake up and realize you’ve made massive progress. Not because you crushed some huge resolution, but because you showed up, day after day, and took the next small step.

So this year, ditch the big resolutions. Don’t set yourself up to fail with impossible expectations. Instead, ask yourself, "What small step can I take today?" and then do that.

You don’t need to revolutionise your life overnight. You just need to start.

When you take those tiny steps consistently, they’ll eventually add up to something bigger than you ever thought possible. Trust me, I accidentally made an album.

Here’s to a year of small steps and big results.
